How to Get the Most Out of Your Massage!

Updated: Oct 20, 2023

Whether it’s your first massage, or your fiftieth, here are some tips and tricks to help you get the most out of your massage! From how to prepare, to during the treatment and afterwards.

Massage Therapy in Bellevue, WA

Before You Arrive:

  • Plan your treatment for a time where you can take things slowly afterwards. This can be tricky when you have many responsibilities, but the more you can rest afterwards, the more you will benefit.

  • Plan ahead with your meals, especially if you have a lunchtime or early afternoon/evening appointment. Like exercise, it’s best not to eat just before your treatment as you may feel uncomfortable if your body is still digesting.

  • Wear comfortable clothes that are easy to dress/undress/lie down in.

  • Plan to arrive on time – if you are running late and feeling stressed it will take longer for the body to relax.

During Your Session:

  • Tell the Therapist any health or medical issues you are experiencing. This helps to both tailor the massage and avoid exacerbating any problems.

  • Tell the Therapist what you would like to get out of the massage – are you there primarily for pain relief, or relaxation, to de-stress or to deal with muscle tightness?

  • Tell the Therapist if you have any allergies. They will use essential oils, as well as creams and/or lotions. If needed, alterations can be made to avoid any allergens.

  • Only remove clothing if you feel comfortable doing so. The Therapist will leave the room as you undress and lie down on the table, and you will be covered with towels/blankets to protect your privacy. If you ever feel uncomfortable, speak up! Our goal is to make you as comfortable as possible!

  • Try to relax! Take deep breaths in and out and close your eyes. The more relaxed you are, the better. Don’t worry about dozing off! If you find your muscles tightening, let the Therapist know, as this is counterproductive to achieving the goal of the massage!

  • If you feel too hot, too cold, or uncomfortable in any way, please say so. An extra pillow or blanket is easy to provide.

  • The Therapist will check in with you about pressure but do speak up if you prefer a lighter or deeper touch at any point.

  • Once the massage is finished, don’t immediately jump up! Stay a few minutes and then gradually and slowly get up, to avoid dizziness and let your body adjust.

  • Give feedback to the Therapist about what was good and what you may want differently at a future session. This helps them to tailor the treatment to you.

After Your Session:

  • Drink plenty of water. This helps to flush out the toxins that have been released.

  • Rest if you can. Keeping your muscles relaxed helps them to continue the healing that has started. Avoid heavy exercise.

  • Eat a light meal and snack. Avoid alcohol/heavy meals for the rest of the day.

  • Leave the oils on your skin/hair for a couple of hours, if possible, to let them fully absorb.

  • The Therapist may advise regular massage sessions. Consistency is key to bringing about change. Be prepared to book again!
